Stansted in the 1970s, scanned slides

Post by andygolfer » Fri Feb 27, 2015 8:34 am

Well it seems to be the time of year when we are all spending evenings scanning old photos so here's some of mine taken at Stansted in 1973, I will add more as I find and scan them hence the title 'in the 1970s'

Ex RAF Brittania XL639 which became EI-BDC then G-BRAC of Redcoat International (at this point the roundels had been painted out but don't know what reg it was carrying. This was standing where the FayAir hangar now stands

the sole Conroy CL44 conversion N447K in TMAC colours taken on the south side storage area roughly where the FedEX cargo establishment now stands, no fences or anything in those days. The aircraft on the left in the background is a CL44 G-ATZH which was painted for a film casting as XV196 (thanks to Nigel Kemp for that bit of info)

Ford used to operate their flights to cologne from STN but this B727 N329K visited from the USA bringing a high flying (literally( executive in to vist the UK operation

another of the same on approach, this was taken from the old track which led from the jam factory right to the end of the runway at that time, the fence is now about 1/2 way back to Elsenham AND note the high security type fence - oh how I wish it was still like that!

and finally for now, the road past the fire school used to go right down to the taxiway (past a caravan park)and there was an old five bar gate (probably unlocked) which stopped you going onto the airfield, people were often wandering around the fire dump looking at the old aircraft and at night the lane became a favourite haunt for courting couples! The terminal satellites stand in this area now. The photo is one of STN's residents at the time, HS.125 G-AVDX The CAFU (Civilian Aviation Flying Unit) were based there doing all sorts of airfield checks, calibration etc

Hope you like them. More to follow when I have time, off birding (hoping to see a goshawk or two) and plane photographing near Lakenheath for the day today! Weather's perfect!

A great selection Andy, greatly enhanced by your commentary on the then-and-now comparisons of the locations.

I look forward to seeing some goshawk photos!

yes Carl.
I believe it is but don't know the i.d. off hand. I can check with some of my stansted friends who were also around then and they might know if you are interested.

I've had confirmation that the B.17 is G-BEDF, aka Sally B, thought it was but I believe there were one or two others around on the airshow circuit at that time so I wasn't sure
