Langford Moor, 1980's NSE model railway

Post by jonf45 » Sun Apr 08, 2018 10:45 am

Hi, after seeing Andys great pics of his layout, i thought id share some of mine. Built for my kids(honest....well almost) about 10 years ago, its undergone a house move which didnt go too well, but it survived!
Based in the late 1980's, fictitious oo gauge Network SouthEast terminus station and small yard with loco fuelling point.
Rough idea of where its based (red lines are real, blue/grey lines are my imagination!!!)

that's brilliant Jon, your detail is far more carefully done than mine - I don't seem to have a steady enough hand. I particularly liked the detail of the guy on the trolley reading a newspaper, looks really good especially when you consider the actual figure size (about 1" high?).

I've just got back from an exhibition and have to say that your's is as good if not better than many that were there (only 2 really impressed me today).

Mine is still w.i.p. but a long way to go to match your's for modelling skill.

Well done

Andy

anybody else built one then? seems I've started something with my post!

Thanks Andy, wish I had more time to do bits to it, and like everything there's loads I would do different if I did it again!
Not only that, everything is so bloody expensive now!!!
I had been asked about taking it to shows, but there's no way it would make it now after the loving "care and attention" the removal men gave it during the house move!

the cost is frightening now, I've bought a lot of bits second hand at exhibitions and model fairs , got caught out a couple times with bits that were no good but generally it's been okay. I did buy all the track new including the points as I've found (and been told) 2nd hand points can be a problem, by the time I've motorised them it works out well over £20 per point (point, motor and switch).

Your ballasting looks very neat - far better than mine although I do plan to go over it again to tidy it up. I did avoid ballasting the points to ensure I didn't get ballast in the workings, it does show but I thought it better to play safe and put up with a slightly bad appearance. Did you ballast yours or did you manage to do them without getting grit in them? all the tutorials make it look easy but I find it certainly isn't.

I think your's would have scored favourably against many I've seen at shows, shame the removal men were a bit careless. What is the overall size of it BTW?

The "Scenic" part is approximately 13 x 2 ft. Ive ballasted the points, but i use fine ballast on those areas, and usually just put a very small amount around that area to avoid getting any in the point blades etc.
Ive only just got round to completing the 3rd rail on it, which is a very time consuming chore, but was a need with all my EMUs!!!
Need to do some more scenic work, new station and canopy needed as those ones are scratch built and showing their age abit, and trees need replacing etc with new ones, but there not cheap either!

the points certainly do look better with ballast I agree. Maybe when I do the final tidy up ballasting I'll try a very small amount but think I will still keep clear of the working parts of the points.

That 3rd rail does look very nice but I bet it took a while to do. I should think that really caches the eye when people see it. The modelling does seem to be a perpetual upgrade/replacement programme something that never really ends. Things like trees and other 'soft' scenery etc do become tatty after a while and I find I am often looking and thinking I could have done that better or should have done it a different way and eventually you bite the bullet.

Keeps me busy and the brain active though!

I know what you mean, if I could afford it I'd rip it all up and do it very differently! Ideally there should be a double slip outside thr station to allow locos from either line to access any platform etc but didnt have room! You live and learn I guess!
Yeah, the 3rd rail took a long time and is very fiddly to do, can't imagine how they manage in N!!!
Need to get some proper working signalling done too....
