British GT championship

Post by mach one » Fri Jun 03, 2016 12:02 pm

on Bank holiday monday i had a day out at oulton park to watch the British Gt championship, the weather was fantastic and the sun shone for most of the day so the sun was in the wrong place making morning shots at knickerbrook impossible so i went further round the circuit to britten's chicane and here are a handful of the many shots i took during the day

That's a lovely set, I've never tried motorsport and always thought the panning would need to be very accurate to keep the subjects crisp and in frame.

If it's as difficult as I think then you've done exceptionally well, if it's not as difficult you've still done very well - a great day's photography and I hope you enjoyed the racing as well.

I assume there are no naughty fields for motor racing enthusiasts :D

thanks for posting them

andy most of the shots that i have posted are taken with the car coming towards the camera and shot at fast shutter speeds to freeze the action, the picture of the number 11 car was taken at 1600th of a second, the other trick is to get on the exit of a corner or a chicane and the cars will be at their slowest making it easier to get good shots, so the pictures above are not really panned shots

now that is a panned shot taken with a 70-200mm set at 70mm and still using a shutter speed of 1/500th second, taken at the fastest part of the circuit with the car traveling at well over 100mph you have got nice motion blur in the wheels but the car is still relatively sharp, i did try going as low as 1/125TH sec but I don't think i nailed a single shot at that low a shutter speed

Aha, I've learnt something today - so there is a bit more to it that meets the eye.

That extra pic with the motion blur is excellent - well done.

thanks again for posting them and for the advice / lesson
