red squirrels 11-2-2016

Post by andygolfer » Thu Feb 11, 2016 6:34 pm

I visit Mersea Island regularly especially during the summer as I have a beach hut there and a few years ago they started releasing red squirrels on the island as it's a 'grey squirrel free zone'. I visited the island today and went looking for them and was very pleased to finally see 2 totally free. I only managed pics of one of them as the other stayed high in a tree although I could see both together briefly. The one I photographed was carrying a fir cone presumably for lunch!
not the best pics I'm afraid but seeing was pleasure enough....

and then it leapt across to another tree - still with the fir cone!

hope you like them C&C welcome

Great shots, Andy. :thumb:

We've got loads of them around here just outside the town/city - but they're extremely hard to photograph.

Thanks Mike.

All we have in Essex apart from on Mersea Island are greys, they seem easy to photograph but maybe because they come out for food so readily. These didn't seem worried by me it was just the branches in the way and I spent some time just watching them.

If (or when) I go to Scotland again I will have to look out for them.

Basically they're terrified of anything that moves up here, they're native to this country but took a huge pounding when those pesky greys arrived and took their territory over.

It's mostly greys we have here, but there are large "pockets" of reds around - you just have to know where to look. ;)

Excellent shots Andy! I know how difficult they are to photograph. Nicely focussed on the critters themselves, depsite the branches etc. in the foreground.

Very nice andy

reds are becoming more popular around here in wales as well, natural resource wales which is the forestry commision have areas not to far from here where they are encouraging the red squirrels population and they seem to be doing quite well
