Captains.
Slipped out of the house on Sunday lunchtime to photograph my other passion in life (other than my good lady).... the Deltic, and here we see 55022 "Royal Scots Grey" working 5Z19, hauling 47851 plus 3 coaches en route from Bo'ness to Carnforth, passing through Killingworth, 6 miles north of Newcastle. I understand the Deltic detached at Hopwood ground frame, and the Hawker continued on to Carnforth.
Thanks for viewing.

Lovely shot Marcus.
Didn't know you were a railways man too. I used to be, but the petty arguments and hypocrisy turned me away from it all.

Thanks Sam
Always admired the Deltics right through the 70's up until 1982 when BR withdrew them from service. I refuse (at this point) to photograph a Deltic on some 20mph preserved railway, so when one appears out on the main line, I like to get out to see them.

It just doesn't do them justice on a preserved line, does it.
Re: Deltic..... 55022/D9000.... BEAST.
Not at all.
Guys like Martin Walker, and the other preservationists deserve a medal for keeping this and the other Deltics in full running order..... but I cannot help but think back to 1981.... that was the last time I saw this locomotive at this location.... operating an Aberdeen to Kings Cross express.....

They most certainly do!
I'm a "Western" man myself and to see it plying the routes it once ran in revenue earning service with BR is always something special. I don't have a memory to hold like you do with 55022. It was all a bit before my time and I only really got interested in the railways in 2005.

I always rated the 'Westerns'... evil looking loco's, but built like the proverbial brick outhouse..... solid as they come.
With the Deltics, it was those tear-drop cab windows, the huge nose..... and that iconic sound... it all had me mesmorised from when I first 'cabbed' a Deltic, probably around 5 years old and with Dad driving them - he was like a god to me, and all the other spotters, and I'm 48 now!!
Those Napier engines on full power still have the same effect on me now, as they did all those years ago..... it's difficult to explain.
Listen, and savour that sound.
